The "Batman Smiles" meme comes from the 1960s Batman television show featuring Adam West. In one particular scene, Batman grins broadly while facing Robin. The image started becoming popular online around the early 2010s when people began using it in new ways. They paired the image of Batman's cheerful face with text that was ironic or sarcastic, often putting his happy expression next to captions that were dark, strange, or contradictory. What made the meme spread widely was the funny contrast between Batman's typically serious character and the ridiculous or unexpected situations people placed him in.
