A Japanese kindergarten teacher named Atsuko Satō first shared photos of her Shiba Inu, Kabosu, online in 2010. The pictures remained relatively obscure until 2013, when they suddenly exploded in popularity. People began creating their own versions of the photos, adding colorful text in Comic Sans font that mimicked the dog's supposed thoughts. These captions used deliberately awkward English phrasing, with catchphrases like "such wow" and "very cool" becoming standard. The template caught on widely because the dog's face conveyed clear expressions, which people found funny and relatable. Platforms like Reddit and Twitter amplified the trend by allowing users to continuously reinterpret and modify the meme for new situations. The phenomenon grew even larger when it became linked to Dogecoin, a digital currency that started as a parody but unexpectedly gained real traction. This cryptocurrency connection solidified Doge's position as one of the internet's most iconic and enduring cultural touchstones.
